Itzhak Perlman kicks off his Florida recital tour with a sold-out appearance at the’Opening Nights Performing Arts Series and Festival’ at the Ruby Diamond Auditorium in Tallahassee, FL on Thursday, March 19, 2015. His longtime collaborator, pianist Rohan De Silva will be joining him in recital.

“He introduced and played the pieces that showed off the things that many listeners love best about him: his sweet silvery tone, his dazzling technique, and not least, his engaging way of talking to an audience,” said David Wright for the Boston Classical Review about Itzhak’s performance in November 2014.

The sold-out Tallahassee performance is the first of Itzhak’s five city music tour of the ‘Sunshine State’ with dates in Sarasota (3/21), Naples (3/22), Fort Lauderdale (3/23) and Jacksonville (3/24).

The mission of Opening Nights Performing Arts Series and Festival at Florida State University in Tallahassee is to engage the university, local, and global communities in creative experiences. Since the inaugural festival sixteen seasons ago, Opening Nights has grown into an annual series of performances from October through April, while continuing to embrace its history in presenting a two-week February festival – bringing performing arts presenting at Florida State University full-circle to the days of the Artist Series and Fine Arts Festival.

Itzhak Perlman and Billy Joel

On Monday, March 9, 2015, Itzhak Perlman surprised 19,000 fans at Billy Joel’s Concert at Madison Square Garden, NY, NY. The two music icons collaborated on the song, “The Downeaster Alexa” from Billy Joel’s eleventh album, Strom Front in 1990. The song is sung in the persona of an impoverished fisherman off Long Island and the surrounding waters who, like many of his fellow men, is finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet and keep ownership of his boat. Itzhak Perlman is billed as the “world famous incognito violinist” in the song’s credits. The two performed the songs, “The Downeaster Alexa” and “And So It Goes” on stage to the cheers of the MSG fans.
