Don’t Miss ‘Itzhak’: A Film & Q & A with Itzhak Perlman in Palm Beach, Florida
Posted Feb 13, 2019 by itzhakperlman

The Society of the Four Arts presents a film screening of Alison Chernick’s documentary ‘Itzhak’ followed by a Q & A session with Itzhak and Toby Perlman on Monday, March 4, 2019, 5:30 PM in Palm Beach, Florida.

From Schubert to Strauss, Bach to Brahms, Mozart to … Billy Joel, Itzhak Perlman’s violin playing transcends mere performance to evoke the celebrations and struggles of real life; “praying with the violin,” says renowned Tel Aviv violinmaker Amnon Weinstein. Alison Chernick’s enchanting documentary looks beyond the sublime musician to see the polio survivor whose parents emigrated from Poland to Israel, and the young man who struggled to be taken seriously as a music student when schools saw only his disability. Itzhak himself is funny, irreverent, and self-deprecating, and here his life story unspools in conversations with masterful musicians, family and friends, and most endearingly his devoted wife of 50 years.

When Itzhak Perlman Played Bluegrass With John Denver
Posted Jan 23, 2019 by itzhakperlman

Here’s the clip below from a 1981 John Denver television special, “Music and the Mountains,” filmed in Aspen.

“What a charming example of Perlman’s musical approach. His primary goal: to communicate the meaning within the notes. Clearly, it works for music of any stripe, whether you play in concert dress or western wear,” wrote reporter Jon Pinnow for Colorado Public Radio’s website.

As Perlman once told Charlie Rose, “I like to talk to music. That’s the way I teach. After a while, when you know how to play the instrument, you should forget the instrument. It’s now time to talk the music, to talk the phrases. … When you hear a phrase that you feel is really meaningful, my God, you cannot just play it. You have to speak it.”
