Below is an excerpt from Melana Ryzik’s article for the New York Times:
The violinist Itzhak Perlman made several appearances in the ’80s, and still gets recognized from them. Because the show mixed music so seamlessly with other segments, “it became a classical pill that was very easy to swallow,” he said. (Perlman, who has used crutches since he had childhood polio, also took part in an influential 1981 segment that addressed his physical difference.)
Itzhak Perlman marked the 53rd anniversary of his first appearance with both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and at the Ravinia Festival over the past weekend.
“Perlman performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with a degree of spontaneity and commitment one might not necessarily expect in a piece he has performed uncounted times,” wrote Howard Reich for the Chicago Tribune. READ MORE
Friends, neighbors and music lovers will be attending the Perlman Music Program gala 25th Anniversary celebration this weekend.
Festivities to honor founders Toby and Itzhak Perlman include a beachfront reception, celebration concert, and dinner with a silent auction on Friday, July 26 at the PMP campus on Shore Road in Shelter Island.
PMP’s story began in 1994 when Toby and Itzhak Perlman arranged a two-week summer program at their home in East Hampton. With the support of donors, Perlman Music Program purchased the former Peconic Lodge property on Shelter Island in 2000.
The Perlman Music Program has expanded to include a spring chamber music workshop, an alumni recital series and music residencies in Sarasota and Israel.
Events in honor of the 25th Anniversary are planned through the summer. PMP alumni are heading to Shelter Island this fall to take part in the Stires-Stark Recital Series.
Students enrolled this year in PMP’s signature Summer Music Program arrived on the Island in late June. They’ll offer free Works in Progress concerts weekly through mid-August.
